Diane and Kenny Winton are preparing for their third ship cruise differently this time. Ever since the couple became aware of the COVID-19 pandemic, they’ve been looking for clorox wipes – so they can clean surfaces such as door knobs as a precaution. This is not normal for them. So far, they have been unsuccessful in their search.
Although no one in Maine has been diagnosed with COVID-19 yet, they are taking all the precautions possible. This afternoon they were looking at Walmart, Falmouth – unsuccessfullly. A pharmacist at Walmart directed this blogger to a shelf that had been stacked high with sanitary wipes earlier today. Several hours later the shelf was bare.
The pharmacist said that face masks are only good for preventing others from contracting the virus and is not self-protecting. “People infect themselves mostly by touching their faces,” said the same pharmacist. He emphasized that washing hands and not touching your face were the best preventives of the virus. Stay home if you don’t feel well, he added.
He added that the N95 mask is the most commonly recommended under these circumstances. That means that it has been tested to block almost all particles getting through the mask down to 0.3 micron in size. The mask needs to fit tightly against the face so that men with lots of facial hair will have to consider cutting it back. The Wintons had checked Target and Hannaford Brothers and came up empty-handed in their search for Clorox wipes.
Pharmacists this blogger has talked to in Portland believe that an outbreak of COVID-19 is inevitable.
“We are going on a cruise to the Caribbean next week. We’ll probably end up circling the ocean off the southern coast somewhere or we’ll end up quarantined in a cabin. If that happens, one of us will come out of the cabin first feet,” said Kenny laughing. The Westbrook couple had not considered cancelling their cruise at any time because of the pandemic.
This cruise is part of a family reunion with family coming from Florida, Massachusetts and Maine.
