Thousands of Mainers watched – in awe and shock – as a day of defiance unfolded before them yesterday.  It began with the awesome  Pride Portland Parade and Festival starting at Monument Square and ended with the evening attack on three nuclear sites in Iran –  a shock to most of the nation.

The usual espirit de corps was present as it always is at this Pride Portland  celebration.  But the atmosphere was more charged than ever.  Although nameless, the parade was clearly infused with a defiant message to President Trump to  keep his illegal Hands Off our communities.  And the thousands of people lining Congress Street were all in on the message.   That was the awe.

The shock came during the evening hours. That’s when Mainers learned that the US military had bombed three different Iranian nuclear sites.  Fortunately, they were returning home safely from their bombing mission  according to news reports.

Later in the evening, at 10;00 pm.,  Convicted Felon Trump repeated what had already been made public – that over 125 US Air Force planes, including 7 B2 bombers, had just completed an incredible assault “that devastated the Iranian nuclear program.”  CF called the assault an “incredible and overwhelming success.”  CF also said the attack “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear program.  Experts disagree on this premature analysis by the President.  The key target was  Fordo – a nuclear site buried deep in an Iranian mountain.

A “New York Times” reporter said that CF often takes a “victory lap before there is evidence of a victory.”

Many wonder whether or not the 14 “bunker buster” bombs could reach that far into the earth to destroy the nuclear site. Iran is also a large country in which it would be easy to move nuclear material to other parts of the country to avoid a direct hit from US fire power.

However, it will take days  and possibly longer to complete a “battle assessment” to determine the true extent of the success of “Midnight Hammer.”  It was stated that this attack has been a long time in planning.  That begs the question how long have CF and BB been collaborating on this assault?

Former Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul raised doubts this morning on cable news about the wisdom of this assult on Iran.  “This shows how isolated we are.  The Prime Minister of Israel is praising us.  Who else is praising us?”  The Ambassador is the author of a new book:  Autocracy vs. Democrary.

The question remains:  What will the expected retaliation from Iran look like against the US?
