Sixth Annual Seaweed Week Includes GMRI Waterfront Expo

Josh Rogers, owner of Heritage Seaweed, 61 India Street, is the Founder of Seaweed Week.

You and your family are invited to participate in the family friendly events that mark the Sixth Annual Seaweed Week statewide beginning next week – April 19th – 28th.  Whether it be at a restaurant or at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute Expo, you are sure to find something either edible or educational or both to make this week memorable.

Maine is the national leader in seaweed farming and harvest, with over 40 kelp farms along the coast, dozens of seaweed businesses and a growing number of innovative seaweed-based products.  This climate-friendly crop benefits people and the planet by supporting coastal communities healthy oceans according to information provided by the Gulf of Maine Research Institute.

In Portland the list of restaurants and bars particiapting this year is long, but includes:  Bar Futo, Central Provisions, Chaval, Duckfat, LFK, Luke’s Lobster, Thirsty Pig, Luna Rooftop Bar, Regards, Ugly Duckling, Woodford Food & Beverage, Hardshore Distillery, Salt Yard Cafe & Bar, Three of Strong and Uncharted Tea.  If your favorite venue isn’t listed above, please check with them to find out why not!

A special addition to this year’s Celebration is the participation of the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, 350 Commercial Street, in Portland.  All activities there from 11:00 am   – 4:00 pm are free and appropriate for all ages.  There will be films, seaweed demonstrations, art, a marketplace, science and much more.

The sponosors of the event are Maine Sea Grant and Heritage Seaweed, located at 61 India Street, Portland and owned by Josh Rogers.  Born and raised in Maine, Rogers spent 12 years in New York City working as a restaurant editor at Zagat.
