Mainers can’t trust Susan Collins to defend our right to abortion. Over the last year, she voted to confirm nearly every anti-abortion judge nominated by President Trump and voted in favor of dangerous abortion restrictions.
Just last week, she voted to confirm Benjamin Flowers, another anti-abortion judge, to a lifetime appointment. Susan Collins has lost her moral compass and broken with her constituents and Maine values according to a press release received yesterday from Planned Parenthood Votes. “This blogger wonders if she ever had a ‘moral compass.’ ”
Her actions are an abject betrayal of Mainers who voted for her in 2020 and everyone who believed they could count on her to do better than her fellow party members. For the last 18 months, Mainers have watched while President Trump and his allies in Congress have used their powers to attack sexual and reproductive health care. They are willing to deny their constituents essential care like wellness exams, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, birth control and more, all to make it harder for everyone, everywhere to get an abortion. Senator Susan Collins has rubbed-stamped that agenda time and time again.
Mainers have not wavered in their support for reproductive rights and health care, but Susan Collins has abandoned the core values of protecting people’s ability to control their bodies, lives and futures. Senator Collins hasn’t shown any remorse for the harm she’s caused, including her vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the US Supreme Court. Kavanaugh cast the deciding vote to end the federal right to aboartion in the Dobbs decision accelerating this country’s reproductive health care crisis.
Maine stte lawmakers and community leadershave been forced dto fight tirelessly to ensure patients can still get abortion care when they need it. But advocates shouldn’t have to work this hard because Susan Collins betrayed Maine values and works against our rights to essential health care. Mainers deserve a senator who will unapologetically champion reproductive rights and health care and i’ts clear that person is not Susan Collins.
