Portland Experiences Record Setting Opioid Use to Date

Two Portland Police Officers saved the life of a person who had overdosed on Cedar Street.  Despite bystanders administering several doses of Narcan, the person was not regaining consciousness and remained without a pulse.

Within minutes Officer Garrick Rogers arrived and immediaely sarted chest comressions.  After 5 minutes  Officer Jordan Jdackson stepped in to take over and soon the person started breathing and was alert.

Portland Police Department has been responding to the ongoing opioid crisis in another record-setting year of overdoses and fatalities.  As of August 31, 2022111, there have been 337 overdoses in Portland with 17 of them fatal.  Officers have administered Narcan 61 times as of Monday.  Comparatively, in 2021 there were 331 overdoses aned 21 fatalities recorded and in 2020 there were 294 overdoses and 36 fatalities. recorded.

“Officers Rogers and Jackson’s actions are typical of the Portland Police Department,” said Substance Use Disorder Liason, Bill Burns. “Our officers know that lives are on the line and they respond with the kind of skill the moment calls for.”
