The Homeless Encampment Under the Casco Bay Bridge Grows Siginificantly Every Day.

On Sunday, November 26, 2023, just before 3:30 am., a Portland Police Officer patrolling in the area of Marginal Way spotted what he thought was a campfire alongside the northbound lane of !-295 to the rear of 140 Marginal Way.

He located a campfire and saw a human body inside of a tent that was on fire.  The fire department extinguished the fire and determined that the subject was deceased.  The cause and origin of the fire will be investigated by the office of the State Fire Marshall, the Portland Fire Department and Portland Police Detectives.  The body has been taken to the office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the cause and manner of death and to identify the individual according to a press release issued by the Portland Police Department late this morning.

Once that individual is identified, the Police Department will provide more information.
