About 200 people attended an almost two hour piano concert at Congress Square Park this afternoon. Today’s free concert was the third stop of an area tour that started several days ago with concerts at the Long Creek Youth Developent Center, South Portland and at a homeless shelter hosted by Preble Street.
The focus of Gather Hear, Inc. a touring non-profit is to provide classical music to populations who don’t ordinarily have access to similar cultural events. It’s creator Mikki Sawada is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, in Rochester, New York. Concert programs were in short supply and not available to this blogger However, Ms. Samada did include music by Chopin, show tunes and that of a friend who is a composer visiting Portland for the occasion.
Although promoted on its blog as a very simple, grass roots operation, in reality Gather Hear, Inc. is a nuch more sophisticated operation than is described on its web page.
Ms. Sawada welcomed conversations with some of the members of the audience at Congress Square Park at the conclusion of the concert this afternoon.
