The 10th Annual Art on the Hill holiday sale got underway this evening at the East End Community School, 195 North Street on Munjoy Hill. The craft show began this evening and runs on Saturday, December 5th from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm and Sunday, December 6th from 11:00 am – until 4:00 pm. There are 82 vendors in this year’s show. The event is hosted by the Society of East End Arts.
The show originated at the former Portland Yacht Services at 58 Fore Street. It relocated to the East End Community School. For several years, Maine College of Art joined with them which significantly raised the awareness of the public for the show. When renovations to the former Porteous, Mitchell & Braun department store on Congress Street were completed, MECA returned its holiday fair to that location.
This is a very popular holiday show that has found its identity Claudia Diller, a popular graphics artist said this afternoon as she was setting up for the show. “The show has figured it out.” Diller who is an original vendor in the show works for small businesses all over Maine – from Bangor to Portland. Her work has changed significantly since she began. There used to be time consuming meetings with clients and now it is all done by email. Not only is it faster, but clients expect fast turn around times as well. Diller is known at the show for her charming calendars – in large and small sizes. Another popular long-time vendor at the Art on the Hill is Lacey Goodrich. She creates a wide variety of ceramic pieces including vases, pitchers buttons and tiles. Her studio is on Merrill Street on the Hill. She sells to Maxwell Pottery as well as others. See below right photo of lamps.
