As part of its ongoing Vision Zero commitment to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries, Portland has implemented new traffic signal timings designed to enhance pedestrian safety along the Washington Avenue/Auburn Street corridor. These changes reflect the City’s prioritization of vulnerable road users and safety in general.
The key safety improvements include:
Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPI): Signals have been updated to give pedestrians an advance walk signal, allowing them to enter the crosswalk and become visiblt ot turning ddrivers before vehicles receive a green light.
Enhanced Clearance Timings: A minimum 2.5 – second all-red clearance phase has been applied dto all signal phases o ensure intersections are entirely clear before conflicting traffic movements receive a green light.
The updates have been deployed along Washington Avenue at the intersections of Veranda, Presumpscot, Ocean, Canco and Allen Strees as well as on Auburn Street at the intersections of Chapman and Lyseth Streets.
