Hannah Pingree announced today that she is running for Maine Governor to succeed Governor Janet T. Mills (D), who is Maine’s first woman Governor and cannot run for a third term because of term limits.
To mark the day, Pingree has schedled a full day of events starting in Rockland between 8:00 am – 9:00 am and ending the day with a rally in Portland at Bayside Bowl, 58 Alder Street, at 5:30 pm.
Between 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm, Ms. Pingree will be at the Heart of Biddeford, 205 Maine Sreet, Biddeford.
Hannah is a lifelong Mainer. She was born in Belfast and raised on the Island of North Haven. She’s served as Maine’s Speaker of the House, runing a small business, and chaired the local school board. Then, in 2019, Governor Janet T. Mills appointed her to serve as Director of Policy Innovation and the Future – a position from which she resigned last month. That resignation sparked speculation that she was planning the launch of her candidacy for Governor. She is also the daughter of the popular Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-ME).
“I am runing for Governor to bring Maine people together to do hard things that none of us can do by ourselves. As a state, we face real challenges – but I also know we have real opportunities. I believe in Maine and I believe in Mainers. I’m ready to travel the state to listen, to learn and to talk about how we can build a strong future for Maine.”
She joins a field of Democratic candidates to succeed Governor Mills that include: Troy Jackson, Shenna Bellows and Angus KIng 111.
Pingree would also face the challenges of the authoritarian Trump administration that has minced no words about his disdain for Blue Maine. Questions remain for many about the future of Governor Janet T. Mills (D). Will she run to defeat the spineless Caribou native Senator Susan Collins (R) who is up for re-election in 2026?

Good to meet you, Carol, today in Hannaford. My first real job after college was a writer/editor in a local (but substantial) weekly newspaper in Fremont, California. I realized after some time covering local politics that journalism was not my future, although it did train me to write clearly and concisely. I look forward to reading your news. Quite a talented group of folks running for Governor — need to be tough as a governor these days.
David, I know you, but didn’t realize that’s who I was talking to today! – if that makes sense. I remember when you wrote a column for the Bangor Daily News a whie back. Standing up to Trump et al in the coming years as Governor Mills has done is a real concern of mine with these candidates. I wish Governor Mills could run for a third term, because I have confidence in her ability to stand up to Trump. I’m flattered that you would read my blog. If you ever want to write something for it, please don’t hesitate to let me know!Best, Carol
