Today, Maine Senate candidate for the US Senate  Graham Platner released a video condemning Governor Janet Mills’, 78, failure to sign LD 1971, a bill that limits the use of Maine resources to support Trump’s agenda of mass deportation, which has resulted in ICE kidnapping people off of Maine streets because Governor Mills failed to sign the bill last session and instead allowed it to become law without her signature, LD 1971 will not go into effect until July.

LD 1971 was passed by the legislature in June and then it sat unimplemented until the Governor so graciously allowed it to go into law a few weeks ago,” said Platner in the video.  “It does us no help currently.  It won’t even be able to actually be enforced for several more months.”

LD 1971 establishes clear limitations on the state’s cooperation with federal immgration enforcement.  Specifically, the legislation mandates that:  LOCAL law enforcement agencies will no longer be allowed to arrest or detain a person solely for immigration purposes;  and CORRECTIONAL facilities will be barred from informing ICE that a person who may be undocumented is being held at that facility.

This legislation was passed by the Maine State Legislature in June 2025, but because law without Governor Mills’, 78, signature in early January.  Because of how the Governor has handled LD 1971, the bill is still not in effect and will not be until 90 days after the legislature adjourns.

Graham Platner, a candidate for the US Senate from Maine, is leading Governor Janet Mills in the same race.  According to recent polling by Maine People’s Resource Center, Mr. Platner is leading the Governor by 7 percentage points.  He also holds a lead over Senator Susan Collins (R), 73, an ally of Trumps, who he is going to unseat.   That’s why he’s the “leading” candidate in the current race. .
