Some Tree Leaves Have Changed in the Portland Area Already.

“This summer was one for the record books!  We had an abundance of daily sunshine with just the right amount of rainfall that has set the stage for a breathtaking foliage season,” said Fall Foliage Spkesperson Gale Ross in the state’s annual report issued this morning. But Ross cautioned leaf peppers and others that the actual color change and timing depends on the weather going forward.  The cooler night time temperatures and shorter days enhance the progression of color,” said Aaron Bergdah, forest pathologist, for the state of Maine.

Typically northern Maine reaches peak conditions the last week of September into the first week of October  The rest of the state’s color progression starts occurring from north to south in mid-October.  Coasal Maine typically reaches peak conditions in mid-to late October.

The upcoming foliage season has become a major tourist season – second only to the summer season.  Visit www.visitmaine.com.
