Whole Foods Market, Inc. has recalled its frozen yellow fin tuna steaks because of two complaints from consumers. The recall involves 26 states, including Maine. This according to an article in the April 6th – “Sustainable Food News,” a food industry daily newsletter edited by Hill resident Dan McGovern.

The two consumers came down with scombroid poisining. This is an allergic reaction to high levels of histamine which according to the Texas-based company may have been found in the frozen tuna fish that has since been recalled. Symptoms of scombroid poisoning include: tingling or burning sensation in the mouth, facial swelling, rash, hives and itchy skin, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.

However, according to Barbara Gulino of Whole Foods on Somerset Road and Marginal Way here in Portland, all frozen tuna had been removed from its shelves. No more shipments are being shipped at this time nor would any shipments be accepted by the Portland Whole Foods store.
