The Apartment Building at 43 St. Lawrence Street Following an Early Morning Fire in Which Two Adults Perished.

Fire investigators from the Office of State Fire Marshall have confirmed the identities of the victims in the four-unit apartment fire at 43 St. Lawrence Street on  Munjoy Hill in Portland on September 21, 2025.  The two have been positively identified by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner as 45-year-old Nicole Niehoff and 40-year old Jake Millett, both of Portland.

Following a thorough investigation, it was determined that the fire was accidential in nature.  Investigators concluded the fire originated on the second floor back deck, specifically, the deck leading to the apartment where the two were loated.

Investigators cannot rule out the careless disposal of smoking materials as a possible cause of the fire according to Shannon Moss, Public Information Officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety, Augusta.
