Minority Leader of the US House of Representatives Hakeem Jeffries (D) of New York. This New Yorker is also an Attorney,
Two federal judges, one in Rhode Island and the other in Massachusetts, have ruled that the Trump adminisration must continue to fund SNAP during this illegal lapse of food assistance benefits for the roughly 42 million people who rely on these funds. The lapse in funding was slated to begin Saturday, November 1, 2025.
Trump lawyers and House Speaker Mike Johnson (D – LA) have maintained that the government is not able to “legally” distribute these contingency funds – funds that the Congress has set aside for emergency situations such as the current meltdown caused by the Republicans who are puppets of President Trump. However, Johnson and Trump lawyers have offered no legal evidence to support their lies. In fact, Louisiana who is represented by Speaker Johnson, would have stood to lose dramatically since it is the second poorest state in the nation. In fact, the five (5) poorest states in the US are Red States, standing to lose the most from their Republican leaders’ failure to support the funding of SNAP.
Because the expiration date for the lapse in SNAP benefits has already been put in place, there will be a delay before the funds become available.
Last night on MSNBC’s news show, “The Briefing” Hakeem Jeffires, (D-NY) told moderator Jen Psaki that: “Trump can find funds for his favorite project, but not to fund SNAP. He’s using this as a bargening chip. Trump needs to do the business of the people rather than enriching himself, destroying the White House and sending taxpayers’ money to his buddies overseas.”
Late this afternoon, Leader Hakeem Jeffries said that since today is Halloween, President Trump should put on a costume and pretend to be President.
