Arson File at Vacant Mill in Sanford Under Investigation; No Injuries

The Maine State Fire Marshall’s Office is investigating a fire that occurred Monday morning at the vacant International Woolen Mill in Sanford according to a press release issued yesterday morning by Shannon Moss, Public Information Officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

The fire was reported shortly before 9:00 am on Monday, October 27, 2025, promoting a large response from local fire and law enforcement agencies.  Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames from a portion of the long-vacant mill complex and worked for several hours to bring the fire under control.

No injuries were reported.  The building has been unoccupied for several years and is regularly monitored by local authorities due to safety and trespassing concerns.  Following an on-scene investigation, officials have determined the fire was likely intentionally set. The case is being investigated as an arson.  The Maine State Fire Marshall’s Office urges anyone with informtion about the fire to contact the Maine Arson Tip Line at 1-888-870-6162 or the Sanford Police Department at 207 – 324-3644.  The investigation remains active and ongoing.
