Three finalists have been selected from the RFQ phase to move forward to the RFP phase to create a memorial to honor Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Portland. They are: Robert Katz, Augusta; TJD&A Landscape Architects, Yarmouth; and Ironwood Design Group, New Market, New Hampshire.
The memorial is intended to inspire visitors to reflect on Dr. King’s life and the values he esposed, prompting everyone to consider how they can contribute to realizing his vision, of an equitable and fair society. City Councilor Pious Ali and his task force selected the location on Bayside Trail where the memorial to the late Dr. King will be placed.
The city has allocated $100,000 for the creation of the memorial and the three “finalists” will each receive $2,500.00 to develop their proposals. There will be an in-person interview and presentation on November 14, 2019. The winning artist will be announced on MLK, Jr. Day on January 20, 2020.
