Trees in their various sizes and shapes are the focus of a delightful art show that just opened late last week at Moss Galleries on Munjoy Hill. Two Maine artists are sharing the spotlight at this show that opened on August 16, 2024 and runs through October 19th, 2024.
The two artists are Anne Ireland and Liz Hoag. Both women have interesting backgrounds. Hoag said of her use of trees in her landscapes: “They give a strong linear element to a composition. They provide extremes of light and dark and depth. They provide an incredibly varied color palette. Having trees in a landscape painting also leads the viewer to where the artist wants the viewer to go. Trees can frame scenes or interrupt scenes……”
Like so many Maine residents, Anne Ireland a native New Yorker, spent every summer childhood in Maine at a family saltwater farm in West Bath. That is where she lives today. She received her BA from Bowdoin College in 1976 and she received her BFA in painting with honors from the Maine College of Art in 1994. Since then she has shown in numerous art galleries in Maine – too long a list to repeat in this limited space. To her credit, Ireland has painted three L.L. Bean catalog covers – a unique distinction on its own.
It’s a delightful show that this blogger who isn’t much for abstract paintings highly recommends that you fit into your busy schedules! Admission is free as always.
