The 34-year old woman who reported that she had  been sexually assaulted on the Back Cove Trail on Wednesday, August 12 has recanted according to a press release issued by Portland Police Department today.

Following an investigation by detectives, the victim now acknowledges that she was not sexually assaulted on the Back Cove trail two days ago.   The motivation for making this false claim is uncertain.  She has not been charged with any crime in connection with the incident.
