The public is invited to the Sebago to the Sea Trail celebration on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at the East End Beach, Portland. The Celebration begins at 12 noon on the beach and will feature the popular Jerks of Grass and a food vendor. The ceremony will celebrate the final 8-mile section of trail to be designated, making the 28-mile trail project complete.
The event will take place at the Beach at the end of Cutter Street. Follow Congress Street East to the Eastern Promenade and take a right. Cutter Street is quickly on the left. The event will take place adjacent to the Beach. Parking is available along Cutter Street as well as on the Eastern Promenade itself.
Members of the Sebago to the Sea Trail Coalition first envisioned the Sebago to the Sea Trail project back in 2007. Its goal was to establish a contiguous trail from the Lake to the Bay. It connects Standish, Windham, Gorham, Westbrook Falmouth and Portland. This 28-mile trail connects these six towns and provides residents and visitors with a wonderful biking, hiking, walking and commuting opportunity. However, there is one 5 mile section of the trail that is not complete. That is a section from South Windham to Westbrook which must be paddled on the Presumpscot River for now.
The noon celebration follows an 8-mile run at 9 am to be guided by Kara Wooldrik, executive director of Portland Trails. Then at 10 am Jim Tasse, education director of the Bicycle Coation of Maine will lead a 1.5 hour bikeride. To register for either of these events in advance via e-mail, contact prlandtrust@yahoo.com
“The completion of this exiciting project resulting from enormous collaboration creates a world class connection in Maine that will be used for generations to come,” said Dan Stewart, MaineDOT’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Program Manager, a former resident of the Hill
