This year’s National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (NLPPW) will take place October 19 – 25 and Portland Public Health is highlighting its new and ongoing services for families to learn about, test for and address potential lead hazards according to a press release received from the city this morning.
In Maine, the most common source of lead poisoning is lead dust from lead-based paint, which can be found in homes built before 1978. Portland Public Health works with families, property owners and community groups in Portland Westbrook to increase awareness about the risks of childhood lead poisioning and actionable steps to address it.
In Portland, where approximately 50% of homes were built before 1950, residents and property owners are urged to learn about lead ppoisoning and order free lead dust test kits through the Maine CDC to detect the presence of lead in their homes. Parents are also encouraged to talk to their child’s healthcare provider if theyhave not received their blood lead test or are concerned about potential exposure. In 2025, Portland Public Health expanded its clinical services to include blood lead testing for families without a healthcare provider.
“Children under the age of six are considered most vulnerable to childhood lead poisoning,” said Portland Public Health Nurse, Nicole, ‘Vick, RN, BSN. “Out goal through this expanded service is to increase access to early detection and prevent serious impacts.”
Even low levels of lead exposure can impair a child’s cognitive development, whch can negatively impact their growth and performance in school. A blood lead test is the only way to know if your chlld has elevated blood lead levels from exposure. Famililes who need to schedule an appointment through our clinic, can call 207 874-8446.
Other NLPPW activities will include “Lead 101” community trainings, resource tabling and a Cleaning Kit Giveaway. To educate the public on approved “wet cleaning” methods, Portland Public Health will be randomly selecting two winners to receive $150+ worth of cleaning supplies that temporarily mitigate lead dust. To enter and reaad the fll eligibility requirements, complete the form by October 31, 2025.
