The Maine Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (MaineCDC) has confirmed the presence of a West Nile Virus (WNV) positive bird in Portland. A total of 9 birds, from six counties, tested positive in a recent round of routine survelliance, conducted by the Maine Department of Fishing and Wildlife. A previous routine surveillance was performed in July, at which time the presence of West Nile Virus was detected in six birds.
The press release issued by the city’s spokeswoman did not indicate where in Portland the infected bird wa located. However, mhn.com has contacted the MaineCDC to determine this information is publicly available..
“While West Nile and other virsuses carried by mosquitos are rare, they can cause serious illness,” said Bridget Rauscher, the city’s local health officer. “It’s important for residents to take precautions against mosquite bites. You can protect yourself from mosquito bitss with a few easy – yet efffective steps and speak to your health care provider right away if you experience any sumptoms.”
These virruses spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. They cananot spread from humana to human or animal to animal. Although rare, these diseases can have serious conseuquences, including death. The best protection is to take precautions against mosquito bites.
