Portland Police Investigate Possible Arson on Bishop Street

On Monday, March 16, 2026, at 2:43 am.,the Portland Fire Department was alled to Huston Commons at 72 Bishop Street for a fire alarm in a third-floor unit.

The first arriving Fire Department units observed smoke coming from a unit within the building.  A small fire was located inside and quickly extinguished.  Fire investigators from the Portland Fire Department responded to the scene and worked in conjunction with Portland Police to begin an investigation.

During the investigation by the Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division, suspicious materials were discovered prompting the Hazardous Device Unit (HDU) to respond.  After examining the materials, HDU determined there was no threat and inveigators were able to safely continue the invesgitation.

It appears the occupandt of the apartment attempted to lower  himself out a third floor window with sheets tied together, before falling to the ground.  He was transported to Maine Medical Center with non-ife threatening injuries.

The investigation into the arson suspect continues, with charged pending.
