Planning Board Workshops for Major Projects This Week Draws Interest

Formerly a Site for B&M Factory, it is Now the Site for the Roux Institute at the Boston Based Northeastern University.

The Planning Board will hold a workshop on the proposed site plan for the Portland campus of the Roux Institute at Northeastern University on Tuesday, February starting at 4:30 pm.  The meeting is to be held in Room 24 in the basement level of city hall.  The property, known as 1 Bean Pot Circle, is the former manufacturing site for B&M Beans.

The workshop is to consider a proposal to construct a 238,000 square foot Learning, Research & Collaboratie Building, renovation of the 58,000 sq. foot Bean Building to create a business incubator space, construction of a 234,550 sq. foot parking garage and development of a 7,500 sq. foot childcare facility.

Currently, the Roux Institute occupies  space in the WEX building ovelooking Portland Harbor.

Other proposed improvements to 1 Bean Pot Circle  include replacement of the existing pier on the property and dthe development of new public open spaces and pathways.  The property totals approximately 24 acres including submerged lands and is zoned B-5 Urban Commercial.

Also on the same planning board agenda is a hybrid workshop to consider a proposal by Community Housing of Maine to construct a new building with 42 age-restricted affordable units and redevelopment of the existing Parish House at the Woodfords Congregational Church property into 37 age restricted affordable units.  The church on the property will continue to function as a place of worship under the existing ownership authority.  None of the affordable units are expected to be ready for occupancy for at least two years.
