Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D) and a bipartisan group of five US Representatives today wrapped the first leg of their week-long fact-finding mission in Eastern Europe amid the on-going humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

The group just spent two days in Poland meeting with US and NATO forces on the ground.  While in Poland, members visited.the US Embassy in Warsaw, met with US troops, including 83nd Airborne service members from Maine, received multiple briefings on NATO efforts to support Ukraine and visited a border entry point at the Przemysl train station.  The group will visit additional European countries through Thursday.

“I was so moved by President Zelensky’s heart-wrenching address to Congress last week and he is  absoluetely right.  We can and must do more to support Ukraine in their fight,” said Congresswoman Pingree.  “We’re here so we can come back home with answers for our constituents by getting first-hand information from people on the ground.  We will be able to better explain how our efforts to support Ukraine and our NATO allies are being implemented and most importantly we are learning what more can be done,” the press release ended.

Meanwhile, a group of volunteers is supporting the Ukrainian people by flying their flag during heavy traffic times near the corner of North Street and the Eastern Promenade on Munjoy Hill.  Victoria and Ben Bernard came up with the idea.  They purchased all the blue and gold fabric that Joann’s Fabric had in stock. The two made eight flags for the morning and late afternoon vigils conducted by a team of volunteers, seven days a week according to Deirde McClure.  “We are showing our support and our hope for peace,” she said yesterday afternoon.  “We will be here for as long as it takes.”

The public is invited to participate by holding one of the flags at this location.  The spot was chosen because of its visibility from 295 and the immediate area.
