Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) late today joined 275 members of the US House of Representatives in passing HR. 3233, the National Commission to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the US Capitol Complex.
“January 6, 2021 was one of the darkest days for American democracy. The nation deserves answers and accountability and that’s why I voted to establish an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate the deadly January 6 terrorist attack on our Capitol,” said Pingree in a press release issued late today. “Much like the outside panel created after the 9/11 attacks, the January 6th commission will give the American people an objective understanding of how such a horrific attack could occur and prevent future threats. As that terrible day in January demonstrated, our democracy is fragile and we must stand up to threats of domestic terrorism.”
H.R. establishes an independent and bipartisan 10-member commission to investigate the January 6th attack on the US Capitol, build a comprehensive understanding of the events leading up to and on that day and ensure this never happens again. Modeled after the 9/11 commission, a January 6th commission will be focused solely on he causes and events of January 6th, be equipped with subpoena power to assist in investigating work and be evenly bipartisan to ensure that all Americans have found in the investigation and its resulting outputs.
Tomorrow the US House of Representatives will vote on a $4.9 billion supplemental budget to secure the Capitol Complex in the wake of the January 6th attack.
