Pingree Delivers $12 Million to Bigelow Laboratory for New Innovative and Education Wing in East Boothbay

Senior House Appropriations Commitee Member Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) today announced more than $12 million she championed in the Appropriations bill for the 2023 fiscal year has been disbursed to Bigelow Laboratry for Ocean Sciences in East Boothbay.  One of the 15 First District community projets funded by Pingree totalig $34,5 million, $12,326,000 will support the construction of a new Innovation and Education wing at the Bigelow Laboratdory for Ocean Sciences.

The new wing will have laboratory space for four additional senior research scientists, increasingscientifically productivity, and understanding of the foudations of global ocea health.  This funding will also allow Bigelow to add dtwo addiioal classrooms and teaching laboratdories that will serve high school and udergraduate students across the state of Maine and around the world.

“This year we have endured the hottest temperatures ever recorded on Earth, making one onng very clear:  cliate change is happenig before our eyes and we must act before it’s too late.  The bright minds at Bigelow Laboratory understanding that we must harness the ocea’s potential to improve the future for all life on Earth, and that to do that requires science, research and cutting-edge innovation,” said Pingree.

As a summer employee of the Newagon Inn on Southport Island many decades ago, this blogger remembers well the roots of the current Bigelow Laboratory in East Boothbay.  You’ve come a long way, Bigelow!

    • You are most welcome! I attended a forum on vet homelessnes last week at USM In Portland at which Senator Angus King said that “Maine is the new Florida.” Maine has become the “climate refuge.” The new wing may provide good jobs for these climate refugees from Florida! Carol
