NewYorkTimes: “In Maine, Many Older Women Prefer the Younger Man for Senate”

Mainers Want Fresh New Faces to Repesent them in Washington, DC Such as Oyster Farmer and US Marine Vet Graham Platner, 41.

One of Numerous Signs at the NO KINGS DAY Rally in June Calling Out Collins for Doing Nothing to Stand up to Trump Authoriatism.  That’s Because She Agrees With His Policies.

New repoting this morning highlighted Graham Platner’s support among women across Maine.  Despite attack ads and DC’s influence, voters are continuing to rally behind Graham – drawn to his platform, his focus on improving their lives and his relentless outreach on the ground, marked by his 50th town hall yesterday.

Just yesterday a new independent poll found that Graham leads Governor Mills by nearly 30 points, outperforms her among both men and women and in a general election matchup against Susan Collins.

Excerpts from ‘The New York Times” include the following quotes:  “Yet for many women in their 60s and beyond — a group that could be seen as likely supporters of Ms. Mills — the choice is not yet clear.  While they respect the governor and her achievements, many said that her age was a factor in their deliberations, along with their growing conviction that new leadership, energy and ideas are essental for meeting what they view as a moment of crisis in the country.”

“Women interviewed last week said the ad had not swayed them.  ‘I admired that he owned up and said,’ Yes, I did that and I’m not the same person that I was,’ said Cokie Giles, 70, a Platner supporter and retired nurse from Brewer.”

Another quote from “The New York Times” piece is:  “Somen women said they have been turned off by certain positions the governor has taken durig her two terms.  A half dozen said they objected to her vote in 2023 of a bill that would have helped Maine tribes access federal benefits.  Several who work as nurses said they believed Ms. Mills had undermined their unsuccessful fight two years ago to set statewide nurse-to-patient ratios.”

Another quote:  “Ms Mills also opposed efforts to pass a ‘red flag’ law after a mass shooting in Lewiston in 2023.  Voters ultimately approved the law, which allows families to petition a judge to remove runs from relatives with mental health issues, in a statewide referendum last.”

The final quote from the piece is:  “But most women interviewed who support Mr. Platner said it was his message that had swayed them most — especially his impassioned calls for universal health care and his focus on the needs of working people.”

Ealier this month, March 21, 2026, “The New York Times” ran an depth article entitled:  “In Break With Schumer, Warren Backs Maine Oysterman.’  One of the points of the article was that Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) endorsed Graham Platner in the “contentious Democratic primary in Maine.”  She is part of a “small group of progressive senators who have backed him in his race against Governor Janet Mills, 78.”  The article goes on to say that the race in Maine is “one of the most consequetial of the midterms,” with Democrats aiming to unseat Senator Susan Collins,………..”one of her party’s most vulnerable incumbents.” This endorsement by Senator Warren has caused a break with Chuck Schumer and other top Democratic figures who support more conservative figures such as Lame  Ducker Mills. Many Maine Democrats, including union members and supporters, who have told Schumer to stay out of Maine politics!

“The piece pointed out at its outset that Graham completed his 50th town hall yesterday.  But it did not point out that neither Susan Colllins, 73,  nor Janet Mills, 78,  had held any town halls themselves.  Are they afraid of the truth?” wonders this blogger.  “Based on personal experience as a former US Senate staffer for a Senator from Connecticut years ago, for Janet T. Mills, who has tunnel vision,  to seriously consider opening a DC senate office at the age of 80 is nothing short of delusional.  Both women need to retire.
