The 9th Annual Boat Building fundraiser to benefit Compass Project gets under way tomorrow at 9 am to 6 pm and runs all day long ending on Sunday afternoon, June 15th at East End Beach. For the second year in a row, it is being held at the Back Cove Park, across from Hannaford Brothers on Forest Avenue. Formerly, it was held at Monument Square in downtown Portland – which can be a very hot place to build boats.
Music and activities will be available all day long. There is a raffle of a 10’6″ cedar planked, decked canoe designed by Harry Bryon. It’s a “Fiddlehead Canoe” built by students at Lyman Moore Middle School last year. Tickets are $3. each or 10 tickets for $20.00. The raffle is set for Sunday at noon and you need not be present to win.
This year seven teams have registered to build boats under the supervision of expert boat buiders in the area, according to Shane Hall, program director. They will be launched at East End Beach Sunday at 4 pm.
The Compass Project headquarters is located in East Bayside and is under the auspices of Spurwink Foundation.
