Michael F. Brennan Sworn in at City Hall
Just after noon today, former Maine State Senator Michael F. Brennan was sworn in as Portland’s first popularly elected mayor in over 80 years. Formalities before his swearing in by city clerk Kathy Jones, included an invocation by Rabbi Carolyn Braun, and Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.
Former Mayor Nick Mavodones quipped – “who wants to hear comments from an outgoing mayor,” to much laughter in the crowded chambers. “I can’t say enough good things about Michael Brennan. He has served Portland long and hard.” He urged Portlanders to “step up and support the Mayor – there will be a lot of press coverage initially. So get behind the mayor. Michael will be a great mayor for Portland.”
For his part, Mayor Brennan acknowledged the recent re-elections of councilors Cheryl Leeman and John Coyne and said he was looking forward to working with them. He recognized Dory Waxman’s work on the council and her future work on a taskforce for the homeless. He also thanked the city staff around him. And, introduced his wife and two sons and other family members sitting directly before him in the well.
The gregarious new Mayor, Brennan, invited everyone to attend a reception at Ocean Gateway at 6:00 pm where his inaugural address is to be given.
