“We never expected to be so successful so quickly,” said Cecilia Vazquez, co-owner of the newly opened “Bakery on the Hill.” Providing a warm and welcoming environment in addition to rich pastries has become standard fare at this much talked about new business, 253 Congress Street.

“We couldn’t close the door, because people kept coming in. It was fun,” said Vazquez of the bakery’s participation in the First Friday Art Walk on Friday, December 2nd. Wolf (the founding owner) was busy trying to keep up with cake orders that night – especially birthday cake orders. And Holiday pastry orders such as their Yule Logs and large cakes – from its holiday menu.

Part of the public appeal of the First Friday Art Walk was a special art show hosted by the Bakery itself. A class of beginning drawing students from nearby Maine College of Art spent class time at the Bakery sketching scenes inside the Bakery that were exhibited on the massive walls. The exhibit will run through January 2012. Giana Caranfa, a freshman at MECA participated in the art show, although she is an advanced artist who aspires to become an art teacher upon graduation. Vazquez is an art student at MECA as well and coodinated the event. Miniature canvasses are at each table on which customers can enjoy pastries while sketching.

The Bakery on the Hill Gallery is open seven days a week. The hours are: Sunday-Thursday from 11 am to 6 pm and Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 9 pm. Please call 653-5341 for more information.
