Kyle Upton, 28, was arrested this evening following a four and a half hour standoff with police at 41 Alder Street, in the Bayside neighborhood. He was arrested by the Special Reaction Team of the Portland Police Department according to a press release issued by the city around 10:30 pm this evening.
Upton was sought in connection with a domestic violence incident that occurred earlier in the day. He was reportedly in possession of a firearm and refused to come out of the building. Crisis negotiators talked with Upton for several hours before convincing him to surrender shortly after 7:00 pm. Upton, who is homeless, was staying with acquaintences in the Alder Street apartment, but was alone throughout the incident.
Adjacent buildings were evacuated and area streets closed while negotiations continued. Streets were reopened at approximately 7:30 pm.
Upton is charged with the domestic violence crimes of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, terrorozing, assault and causing a police standoff.
