Maine Announces 2026 County Teachers of the Year

Adrianne Sheterhelm, English and Alternative Education Teacher at Windham High School, has been selected as Cumberland County’s 2026 Teacher of the Year, according to a press release  issued late last week by the Maine Department of Education.

The State celebrated its newest cohort of County Teachers of the Year on Friday, May 15, 2026, at the Hall of Flags in the Maine State House, the Maine Department of E ducation (DOE) in partnership with Educate Maine announced the 16 teachers, representing every county in the state who were selected for this honor this year.

This year hundreds of people from school communities across the state–icluding students, parent, colleagues ad administrators–nominated morre than 500 educators for the Maine Teacher of the Year program.  Local panels of teachers, principlals, business leders, and community members then chose the 16 educators from that pool.  The members of the 2026 Maine County Teachers of the Year cohort represet a wide range of experise.  They work in pre-K through high school classrooms, have been teaching for between seven and 31 years and specialize in areas such as chemistry, math, English, alternatice education, Spanish, visual arts, digital media and more.

“As the daughter of a long-time public school teacher and as someone who raised five children who attended public schools in Maine, I know the profound impact that a teacher can have on a child’s life,” Governor Janet T. Mills said  “These 16 outstanding teachers, one from each county, represent the very best of Maine educators working to prepare students for bright futures here in our state.”

This summer, the 2026 Maine County Teachers of the Year will embark on the intensive Maine State Teacher of the Year selection process.  The 2027 Maine State Teacher of the Year will be announed in the fall.
