“We were walking past Kurier last night and I saw these clogs in the window,” said Chandler Shippee, this afternoon.  “I saw the low heel clogs and thought they were beautiful.  I was prepared to pay $300. for them. That’s what they would have cost in Boston.”

Visiting Portland from Boston to celebrate Chandler’s  21st birthday today, the mother and daughter duo were shopping along the Mountfort Street area of Congress Street, near the bottom of Munjoy Hill.

After a night spent in Falmouth, the pair returned to Kurier, 247b where Chandler tried on a pair of clogs. “I felt like my feet melted right into them.  They are a work of art,” she said..  Chandler expects to buy another pair on-line when she has worn these for a while. Custom made on-line orders take two or three weeks to be filled.

Although the two were unaware of it, today was the opening of the expanded Kurier boutique owned by Jasmine Clayton. A former Maine College of Art student, Clayton is well-known for her high quality leather handbags.  She has cornered that market.

Three years ago, she started making clogs which are now a large part of her product line because of their high quality.  The original Kurier storefront next door is needed exclusively for the production of the clogs.  Clog production requires a lot of space and Clayton was fortunate to get it when KnitWit, a yarn store next door, relocated to the west end of Portland. This expansion into the former KnitWit has allowed Ms.Clayton to sell much more than her own product line.

She now sells cotton and linen clothes by Menique that are “simple, elegant and classic,” said Savanna Pettengill, manager of the Kurier boutique.  A  line of skin care products. BKind, from Canada is in stock.  Scented candles, from the P. F. Candle Company in California, are available.  And much more for the discerning customer to checkout!

“I love shoes.  My feet are my job.  So I believe in high quality.  These are high quality,” said Gwendolyn Jackson, an operating room surgical technican at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, in Boston and mother of Chandler.  Jackson went on to explain that clogs are the preferred footwear of nurses. When nurses are on their feet for hours, they need the lift for their arches that clogs give them.  “DANSKO are the clogs that nurses wear.  But these clogs are far superior to DANSKO,” said Jackson.  Then the duo left to continue their shopping at Ferdinand, owned by Diane Toepfer, at 243 Congress Street.

“Jasmine Clayton is a good business woman who executes her business plan well.   She’s also a good friend,” said Diane Toepfer.

Store hours are 11:00 am – 6:00 pm Wednesday – Saturday currently. Subject to change as spring approaches.
