About seventy (70) homeless people were treated to an extraordinary Thanksgiving dinner today at Lincoln Park in Portland according to Courtney Bass, one of the organizers of the event. The Dinner with all the trimmings ran from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm and featured a Thanksgiving dinner with turkey, mashed potatoes, peas, stuffing, gravy and pumpkin pie.
The cooking was done by volunteers with the non-profit My Father’s Hand, a homeless outreach program, managed by Carol Waig. Courtney Bass, manager of the recently formed The Light Within joined skills and expertise to make the day as warm and welcoming as it was to all. Bass is a manager at the nearby Milestone Recovery, 65 India Street. She manages her new non-profit out of her home in Standish.
Guests learned of the event through shelters and friends. One source of information came from the Coffee Corner on Cotton Street. Participants attend it every Tuesday and Friday morning at 6:00 am and 6:45 am.
The day was overcast and raw, but the spirits of everyone were bright and cheery. One woman was interested in the upcoming US Senate election. She asked who this Left Wing Lunatic thought she should vote for. LWL recommended Graham Platner. She liked that idea because that is the man whose lawn signs she sees popping up all over Portand. We agreed that Senator Collins should not be re-elected, Politics is everywhere!
A similar Dinner is planned just in time for Christmas next month.
