David Simmons, his wife and four young children were among the first customers today – the youngest is five months old. The plan was to let The Three older children pick out a tree but agreement had not been reached when this blogger met up with thie Simmons’ family. Recently moved here from North Carolina, Simmons said he was glad to find Sea Gulls Tree sales in Portland so the family doesn’t have to travel out of the city.
Asked if this blogger could take a family photo in front of the balsam fir trees, he laughed and said: “I don’t think so,” just as The Three scurried by to check out another tree for consideration to take home.
As in the past two years, 400 balsam fir trees were trucked to West Commercial Street from MMB Tree Farm in Van Buren, Aroostook County, earlier this week. The sizes vary from 3 foot trees up to and including 12 foot trees. Prices are a little higher than last year because of the increase in costs associated with transporting these trees to Portland. Trees cost $12. per foot this year according to Sloan Baxter, a weekend employee. In addition is a stunning variety of already decorated wreaths to assist you in your decorating for the holidays.
The Clam Bar will remain open indefinitely according to its manager, Tim. The menu includes your favorite Maine seafood dishes including clam chowder, lobster rolls, steamers and much more. It will be open Thursday – Sunday from 11;00 am – 5:00 pm. There is indoor seating available where you can enjoy a bowl of hot, warming clam chowder while your tree is being trimmed to meet your requirements.
The Little Shop returns with gift ideas and stocking stuffers for everyone on your gift list. Managed by co-owner and jewelry maker Tegan Curry, it is packed with the art work of four local artists.
