In an op-ed published today in the Sunday edition of the “Toronto Star,” Canada’s largest-circulation newspaper, Governor Janet Mills spoke directly to the Canadian people about Maine’s enduring friendship with Canada. She made it clear that President Trump’s trade war does not reflect the views of Maine people.
“As the Governor of Maine, I want Canadians to know that the people of my state respect your proud history as an independent nation,” wrote Governor Mills. “We will continue to raise awareness about how damaging these tariffs are and push Washington to end this dispute.”
Governor Mills detailed how the trade war is hurting people on both sides of the border with higher costs, lost manufacturing jobs and even posing threats to winter road-salt supplies. She called on President Trump to de-escalate the dispute before Canada’s retaliatory tariffs take effect September 8.
“We share more than a border with Canada – we share an economy, a history, friendships and families and a way of life,” wrote Governor Mils. “Our relationship does not belong to any one president or prime minister. It belongs to the everyday Mainers and Maritimers who can pull up a chair at Tim Hortons’, do business together and lend a hand when a neighbor needs one.”
Quoting from one section of her op-ed, the Governor said: “His tariffs on Canadian lumber have hit Maine’s forest products industry hard, with exports to Canada last year falling by 20 per cent Increasing costs for Canadian wood has impacted supply throughout the industry. As a result, Woodland Pulp in Balleyville was forced to temporarily lay off 144 millworkers last fall. That decision had a ripple effect across the border, impacting more than 50 timber producers throughout the Sussex Region of New Brunswick………….In the Maine section of the St John Valley about 90 percent of municipal road salt comes from Canada. In response to the president’s new tariffs, a major Canadian distributor has announced that it will halt deliveries for the foreseeable future…………………”
Some “talking heads” on cable news question if the Concerned Collins, despite her Campaign of Concern, re-election effort can possibly survive this latest assault to the Maine economy from Corrupt Trump reports this blogger. Apparently, his revenge campaign continues its march North to Canada. It has no boundaries.
