The public is invited to join Governor Janet T. Mills (D) the first women governor of Maine and its first woman AG, at a “get out the vote” rally tomorrow, Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at Monument Square in downtown Portland. The rally starts at 4:00 pm. It’s to highlight the threat that Republican candidates, like Paul LePage, pose to the future of reproductive rights in Maine. The rally is hosted by the Planned Portland Maine Action Fund.
Governor Mills will join Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D), Speaker of the House Ryan Fecteau, Senate Assistant Majority Leader Mattie Doughty and Senior VP of Planned Parenthood for Public Affairs Nicole Clegg. The coalition of Maine leaders intends to encourage Maine voters to cast their ballots in support of candidates committed to protecting access to reproductive health care in Maine.
Whlle Governor Mills is a champion for reproductive rights, Paul LePage staunchly opposed abortion. As Governor, LePage supported cutting funding to family planning clinics, frequently attended anti-abortion rallies, and said: “We should not have abortion” and “let’s do it” to over-turning Roe v. Wade.
This year the former Governor has diminished the importance of access to women’s reproductive health care, saying: “I don’t have time for abortion” and “abortion affects few” people. LePage also reaffirmed his opposition to abortion for low-income women.
Governor Mills was recently endorsed by the “Bangor Daily News” for reelection over her challenger Paul LePage. The Editorial Board cited her demeanor and leadership over the “crass” LePage.
