Golden Tempo, a horse not considered to be a favorite, was the winner of the 152nd running of the Kentucky Derby that ended early this evening. The odds were 23 – 1. In an amazing 1 l/4 mile run, he moved up from last place to win the Derby.
The race was historic, because Cherie DeVaux, was the first women trainer to win the Kentucky Derby. The jockey was Jose Ortiz. It was his first win in the Derby following eleven previous tries. His brother was the jockey on Renegade, a co-favorite.
Following the Race, the owner would not say whether or not the winning horse would run in the upcoming Preakness Stakes. “We’ll have to see how he comes out of this race,” she said. The Preakness Stakes, for three year olds, is set for May 16, 2026 in Maryland.
Golden Tempo defeated 17 challengers. Originally 19 horses were expected to run. But Great White was eliminated from the race because of a fall on his back he took while trying to load him into the gate. That brought the starting gate down to 18 horses.
