In ten days full of activities for Gay Pride Week, a poignant event occurred today at the Portland Public Library. It was a display of 96 panels of quilts made in memory of those whose lives were lost to AIDS.
These quilts are part of the Names Project of the Northern New England Chapter based in Ogunquit. They are maintained in a climate controlled warehouse in Ogunquit. This is the first year that the quilts have been on display in Portland and it is hoped that it will become a permanent part of Gay Pride Week here.
On Saturday, June 20th the popular Pride Portland Parade takes place. It begins at noon in Monument Square and goes to Deering Oaks Park for a Festival. The Festival runs from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm.
