First Workday of Season at Eastern Cemetery, Hosted by Spirits Alive; 5/7 Morning

Historic Eastern Cemetery, 224 Congress Street, on the Hill.

By Carol McCracken  (Post # 766)

The season’s first workday has been announced by Spirits Alive at the Eastern Cemetery for Saturday, May 7 between 9 am – noon.  Volunteers are asked to spend the morning gardening in and tidying this beautiful green space overlooking Portland harbor. The Cemetery is located at 224  Congress Street at the bottom of the Hill.

If you have tools, please bring them with you.  However, rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows and work gloves are available for lend. Volunteers will be trained on how to perform gardening tasks while carefully working around the historic stones.    If you can’t make this date, you are invited to come out to the next workday on June 11th.

Spirits Alive is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and preservation of Portland’s historic Eastern Cemetery through a range of activities including promotion and education.  Founded in 2007, the group carries out an active program of seasonal tours of the cemetery, a winter lecture series and is conducting a stone-by-stone inventory of the nearly 4,000 grave markers still existing in the 340-year old cemetery.
