On the 200th anniversary of Maine’s becoming a state in 1820, historian Herb Adams will recount the fascinating story of the Maine Constitution on the very site of its drafting.  The event will be held on Sunday, March 15th from 1:00 – 2:00 pm, at First Parish Church, 425 Congress Street, Portland.

It is a tale “to make Angels weep” of 35 years of votes and conventions, climaxing in the US Congress with the Missouri Compromise, matching Maine as a new free State with a new slave State.

Come hear the story of shipbuilders, slaveholders, smugglers, the Sultan of Bath, generals, gamblers, grumblers – the all make cast that ushered Maine into the US coupled with Missouri as a slave state, staving off the Civil War and at the same time rendering it inevitable.

Donations are welcome from those who are able for this free event.
