The Maine State Fire Marshall’s Office is investigating a fatal fire that occurred early Sunday morning at a residene at 52 Maintenance Lane in Newfield. The Newfield FIre Deparatment responded to the fire which destroyoed a two-story home. Fire Marshall investigators suspect that the homeowner Kristofer Whittemore, 39, may have been inside the residence at the time of the fire.
A search of the debris led to the discovery of human remains, which have been transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for positive identification.
The home is considered a total loss. The cause of the fire remains under investigation according to a press release issues this evening by Shannon Moss, Public Information Officer, for the Maine Department of Public Safety, Augusta.
