Yesterday afternoon a serious motor vehicle accident occurred on Middle Street, near the Portland Police Department.  The fatal accident involved a sport utility vehicle and a pedestrian according to a press release issued earlier today. The accident occurred about 5:20 pm.

The pedestrian, Lee Whittier, 82, of Falmouth, sustained serious injuries as she attempted to cross the roadway without a utilizing a market cross walk and was struck by a 2005 Honda CRV operated by Tori Stewart, 36, of Yarmouth.

Whittier was transported from the scene to Maine Medical Center where she later died from her injuries.

Middle Street, between Franklin Street and Pearl Street, was closed to traffic for approximately two hours.

The accident continues to be under investigation by the Portland Police Department.  Anyone who may have witnessed this incident is asked to call the Portland Police Traffic Division at 874-8532.
