STOP THE CORRIDOR is a coalition of Mainers opposed to a massive transmission line project proposed by Central Maine Power and its parent, Avangrid. EnvironmentMaine, one of Maine’s premier organizations dedicated to protecting our state’s pristine outdoors, has joined STOP THE CORRIDOR.
“The facts are crystal clear: CMP’s massive transmission line will permanently scar pristine wilderness in western Maine,” said Carissa Maurin, state director of EnvironmentMaine, wrote in a press release recently. “We are deeply opposed to the environmental divestation and urge Mainers to let their elected officials know that cutting the Maine woods in half for profit is a terrible idea.”
The project would carry hydro power from Canada directly through here to Massachusetts and would require a massive build out of infrastructure in one of the most environmentally sensitive and iconic areas of Maine. The project was chosen by Massachusetts after a similar project was rejected by New Hampshire regulators because of its outsize environmental input.
Maine’s state environmental and ratepayer protection agencies have also expressed concern about the project’s impact. Avingrid has a major office in Portland.
