On Saturday, Aprll 22, 2023, from 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm., a group of local non-profits and activists will strike in downtown Portland for a greener and safer world that prioritizes people over polluting corporations.  The Rally starts at Monument Square with a march to city hall where speakers will address the crowd. Activists will speak on policy actions including a consumer owned utility, the Pine Tree Amendment, investing in Maine’s public transportation systems and tribal sovereignty.  The event calls upon local representatives to take action by replacing CMP with a consumer owned utility.

The event is sponsored by multiple non-profits including Maine Youth for Climate Justice and Sierra Club Maine.

Earlier in the day, the city of Portland is hosting a free, family-friendly event at Payson Park.  It runs from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm.   City departments are teaming up with local green organizataions to host a festival of fun, music, food trucks, e-bikes,  outdoor activities and much more.

The food truck park in the Cutter Street parkig lot off the Eastern Promenade opened on Saturday, April 15.  The number of food truck operators has been halved this year by the city of Portland; seven rather than fourteen as  last year.  Additionally, participats have been charged a fee of $3,900.  Food truck operators are still hoping that the city will provide power to the park so they can get rid of noisy generators they need to operate. A visit to this popular park and the nearby playground would be another good way for families to celebrate Earth Day 2023.
