Dr. Nirav Shah Announced his Run for the Governor of Maine This Morning. Also, a Lawyer, he is a Visiting Professor of Statistics at Colby College, Waterville.
Dr. Nirav Shah announced this morning that he is running for Governor of the State of Maine.
A Democrat, he was appointed by Governor Janet T. Mills (D) to serve as Director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention in 2019. In that position, he became a popular and respected household name during the COVID-19 pandemic. Then, in 2023, he became deputy director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during the Biden administation. Dr. Shah stepped down from the Trump administration position on February 28,2025 in Atlanta, GA. where he had been employed.
He returned to Brunswick where he and his wife have a home. He is a visiting professsor of statistics at Colby College in Waterville. Dr, Shah received an honorary doctoral degree from Colby in 2022. Dr. Shah joins a crowded field of candidates competing to replace Governor Janet T. Mills (D) who will be vacating the governorship because she can not serve as Governor for a third terrn. Hannah Pingree (D) a former member of Governor Mills’ staff and daughter of Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D) is one of those in the hunt for the Blaine House job. So is Troy Jackson (D) a favorite of progressives who was endorsed by Sen. Bernie Sanders, Independent of Vermont. Secretary of State Shenna Bellows has announced her candidacy for Governor of Maine; there are seven Democrats running for this position.
Governor Mills announced her candidacy to run against incumbent Senator Susan Collins (R) in her bid for reelection next year. Originally, the popular Governor had planned on announcing her decision in November of 2025. But, she suddenly moved up that announement to mid-October for an unannounced reason. This blogger speculates that she discovered through telephone polling that she was far behind her closest challenger Graham Platner and had significant catching up to do in the southern Maine area, where she is especially popular.
