The annual Deering Center Memorial Day Procession occurs this year on Monday, May 27. It starts at Longfellow School at 2:00 pm.and ends at Evergreen Cemetery with a commemoration following the Procession.
The procession includes the Deering Memorial Post 6859 VFW Honor Guard, Harold T. Andrews Post 17 Honor uard, Department of Correctios Honor Guard, Drummers Janet & Jeremy Turner, Riderless Horse, Chldren Carrying Flowers, Veterans/Jeeps, Pprtland Cub Scout Pack 97, Community Members Bearing Signs with Names of Wars, and the Claddagh Mhor Pipe Band.
Governor Janet T. Mills (D) has ordered that the US and State of Maine flas be lowered to half staff statewide from 12:01 am to noon on Memorial Day in honor and recognition of America’s fallen service members she announced in a press release issued today. This is consistent with a directive from President Biden.
“Throughout history, Maine people have always answered their nation’s call to serve – whenever our nation has been tested, brave men and women from Maine have stepped forward to shoulder the responsibility of protecting our cherished rights and freedoms,” said the Governor. “On Memorial Day – and every day – let us pay tribute to all who have served Maine and the nation in uniform and honor the memories of those who gave as President Lincoln said, “the last full measure of devotion.”
