“Maine is on the move.  Munjoy Hill is becoming a technology hub,” said Governor Janet T. Mills (D) during opening remarks at the grand opening of the headquarters of COVETRUS on Munjoy Hill this morning.  She added that Maine is becoming known as the state to move to live, raise a family and start up a new business.  The Governor cited the collaboration with the pharmacy department of the University of New England as well.

COVETRUS is a global animal health technology and services company dedicated to supporting the companion, equine and large animal vet markets.  It has 6,000 employees worldwide and has about 300 employees locally.  “It’s a hybrid company,” said Chris Allman-Bradshaw, Senior Director for Public Relations, for the newish company.  “It’s ‘industrial chic'”, said Mark Graham construction manager of the light and bright building interior, a former yacht builder for Hodgdon Boat Builders, East Boothbay, Maine.

In 2018, the company was awarded $9 million from the Maine Technology Institute to help finance the new facility that is expected to help add or sustain hundreds of jobs in Maine according to a press release issued by Ben Goodman, of the Governor’s office.

Dr. Jennifer O’Grady, PharmD. RPh., PRS, VP, North American Center Led Quality & Regulatory Affairs for Covetrus, traced the history of the Portland pharmacy from 1,000 sq. feet four years ago to its current size of almost 50,000 sq ft. at 12 Mountford Street on Munjoy Hill.  The addition of the compounding suites last year, enabled the Pharmacy to grow to its current size. It has grown so that now it dispenses 56,000 animal prescriptions per month.  The record for a month of prescription fulfillment is 74,000 orders Dr. O’Grady said.

“Leveraging automation and innovation enables Coventrus to scale our business and provide personalized patient care.  Part of this personalized care is ensuring timely service, so that our pet patients can begin or continue their medication therapy with ease,” Dr. O’Grady told the gathered audience.  “Being in Portland brings us the advantage of cross functional team collaboration.”

“So what does the future look like,” Dr. O’Grady asked.  “We believe the future looks bright.  We will continue to grow in Portland.  We will extend personalized compounding services throughout New England and the mid-Atlantic states.  Pets are seen as family members.  We want our pets to live long and healthy lives….Covetrus will be with them every step of the way.”
