Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) released the following statement after Israeli’s Cabinet approved a deal for the release of 50 hostages held by Hamas terriorists in exchange for a multi-day ceasefire.
“I welcome the Israeli cabinet’s approval of an agreement to cease fighting in Gaza for four days in exchange for the release of 50 Israeli hostages. We must work with Israeli and the international community to bring a permanent end to the horrific violence and war in the region and work toward a two-state solution that provides lasting peace between Israeli and Palestinian state.
Several steps must be taken to achieve lasting peace in the region: That path demands the immediate release of all hostages held by Hamas. Second, attacks against civilian targets must end. Third, a permanent bilateral ceasefire must be reached to allow desparaely needed humanitarian aid into Gaza. To that end, Congress must soon afer we return to session pass a comprehensive bill that includes robust humanitarian aid.
In the weeks and months ahead, America must be committed to removing Hamas from power and securing a two-state solution with Israel, the Palestinian Authority, regional partners and our allies around the world. A two-state solution must include the creation of a democratic sovereign Palestinian state with permanent bordeers and ensure the safey of Israel.
And, in the months and years ahead the international community must be committed to rebuilding Gaza and Israel. My colleague Jamie Raskin has referred to the framework as a modern Marshall Plan and I endorse his ambitious goals to ensure the long-term safety and security of the region.”
